About Bega Valley Shire Council
The Bega Valley Shire is located at the south-eastern corner of New South Wales, half way between Australia's two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne and three hours drive from the nation's capital, Canberra.
The Bega Valley Shire has a coastline 225km in length, featuring 101 ocean beaches and 29 estuaries. Our coastal fringe extends from Wallaga Lake in the north to Cape Howe and the Victorian border in the south. Collectively this our coastline forms the beautiful Sapphire Coast, the heart of Australia's Coastal Wilderness.
The local community has consistently told Council that the protection of our coast and waterways is a high priority for them and as such Council has a strong focus coastal management and protection through its Environment, Landuse Planning, Recreation and Waste Management programs. In the 2016 Community Survey of Council's services 'Maintaining healthy and clean waterways' was identified as the most important of all of Council's services.
